Dr. Wiesen provides a variety of surgical services. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are conservative in our treatment recommendations and thus limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Periodontal procedures may be available to regenerate the bone and gum tissue to their original function and cosmetic appearance. In order to be a candidate for regeneration, early treatment of disease is essential.
Osseous Surgery
Traditionally, gum disease is treated by eliminating the gum pockets by removing the infected gum tissue and by re-contouring the uneven bone tissue. Root treatment is done concurrently to remove toxins and deposits imbedded in the root that may impair proper healing. This is still the most effective way of treating gum disease however additional new and more sophisticated procedures are used routinely today. These include techniques to re-grow some of the destroyed bone through use of a guided tissue membrane and bone graft.
Guided Tissue Bone Regeneration
This surgical procedure attempts to "regenerate" the previously lost gum and bone tissue. Most techniques utilize membranes, which are inserted between the gum and the bone defect during osseous surgery. These membranes are bio-absorbable and simply dissolve during the healing process. Their purpose is to serve as a barrier to keep bone forming cells inside the localized area of bone loss. Guided tissue membranes most often require support from a bone graft in-order to achieve maximum results.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafts are bone substitutes that are placed into the bony "hole" adjacent to your tooth, which was created by the periodontal disease. The bone graft serves as a matrix to allow your bone forming cells to grow into the hole and begin laying down new bone. A guided tissue membrane may be necessary to hold the graft into the hole during healing. These procedures are effective ways to assist in filling in the damage caused by.
Some of the surgical procedures used to treat disease by Wiesen Periodontal Group are also used to enhance your smile cosmetically.
